Canvey Island 0 Ware 0
Simmonds the hero as Ware come through on penalties.
As expected there were several changes in the Ware team for this match. Some were positional with Murat Karagul up front after Brian Haule and Gareth Price were rested whilst Joe Simmonds took over between the posts. New names also appeared on the team sheet as James Mays made a first start and several under-18 players were among the substitutes.
With the Canvey line-up also showing several changes from their last league game there was an experimental feel about the game as both managers sought to evaluate fresh talent or give fringe players an opportunity to prove themselves.
There were chances for Ware in both halves. Nathan Mukuna's shot was well saved before the break and Charles Kutin, one of the under-18s to come off the bench, was almost on target with his second touch of the game.
Neither side got a significant touch however and the game went to penalties without a goal scored. Ware netted their first two thanks to Karagul and Evandro Delgado but Joe Simmonds saved Canvey's first with his legs and their second with a hand. The hosts pulled it back to 2-1 after Alaa Oujdi's spot kick hit a post but after Joe Reynolds scored Ware's third another miss from Canvey sealed the game for the Blues.
We await the draw for the eight matches in the next round.
Meanwhile Ware are now just ten matches away from their 5,000th first team game since 1892. I think I'll start a countdown.
