Cheshunt 1 Ware 3
Ware come from behind as Finbarr Robins celebrates a milestone with his first goal for the club.
Despite the absence of captain Ahmed Abdulla and Marvin Hamilton both injured Ware were good enough to come from behind and score a clear victory in the first derby match of the season.
A first half which was by all accounts a dull affair was illuminated towards the end by a flurry of activity commencing with a goal from Cheshunt when Tom Bruno scored direct from a corner. Before that headers from Murat Karagul and Yannick Kamanan and then one at the other end from Kyle Roberts were virtually all that troubled the two keepers.
Now however the home side were enlivened and Daniel Cheema found the chance to fire in a shot that was held by Tom Coulton before danger man Jason Hallett broke into the area. He was brought down by Alaa Oujdi but Joe Pearman's miss from the spot when he dragged his shot wide may well have proved the turning point with the relief of half time coming soon after.
There was more excitement in the second period as Ware started to put some football together not least when Marcus Milner was on the end of a good move that brought a fine save out of James May in the home goal. But Ware were not to be denied and the equaliser arrived on 52 minutes when Kamanan fired home a free kick from the edge of the area.
Blues were ahead after 65 minutes with Milner firing in a cross that May failed to handle leaving Karagul with the chance to score from within the six-yard box.
The game was made safe when Finbarr Robins, making his 50th appearance for the club, scored his first ever goal cutting in from the right wing and drilling through May after 87 minutes. Did he take his cue from the match preview? Just asking.
The win lifted Ware to 7th in the table just outside the play off places but it is of course very early days. Bury Town set down a marker with their 6-0 win at Hertford but a floodlight failure at Maldon caused the abandonment of their game against AFC Sudbury. There were thus six teams with a game in hand over Ware by the end of the evening.
Even so a win has lifted spirits as well as league position.
