Ware 1 Redbridge 1
Frustration for Ware as they fail to convert possession into goals.
It says much that in a game in which Ware dictated play for long periods their man of the match was arguably Tom Coulton. He pulled off a number of saves to prevent Redbridge from capitalising on the breaks they made as Ware's attacks foundered against a solid defence. That he was eventually beaten following a mix up in defence after 70 minutes also speaks of Ware's inability to impose themselves on the match despite so much possession.
It all started so well with Ware's passing game opening up the visiting defence and several chances went begging as shots fizzed narrowly wide of the target. During the opening 30 minutes Ware were just too quick for their opponents and the yellow cards mounted as attempted tackles were connecting with ankles rather than the ball.
Redbridge were left to heave the ball clear during this period and failed to make any co-ordinated attacks. Even so long balls into Ware's half did cause them problems and for a while it looked as though the visitors might take the lead. Three times Coulton came to their rescue but when Redbridge's Charlie Parish departed following his second caution after 37 minutes the rest of the half reverted to type.
There was much optimism about Ware's chances in the second period but Redbridge did what their circumstances dictated. Ware's passing movements became bogged down in the final third as the visitors funnelled back in defence. There was plenty of pressure but nothing like the clear cut chances of the first half hour.
In the end it took a piece of individualism from Charlie Ledula to separate the teams. As the hour mark approached he picked up the ball on the left, a position from which he had given Redbridge trouble all afternoon. He worked towards the goal line before turning back and, making an opening for himself, sent a right footed inswinger into the net off the far post.
It was a good goal and one that suggested Ware had put themselves on the way to three points but Redbridge were still breaking dangerously and Coulton had again been called in to the rescue on a couple of occasions. But Ware's undoing came in the most frustrating of circumstances. Coulton's short clearance to Ryan Hervel was returned but with too little force, the ball bobbling on the turf at a vital moment. Despite their best efforts both players were unable to prevent Gavin Cockman from slipping in to steal it and score from an angle.
