Ware get reprieve and stay at Step 4

1 week ago By Stephen King

Worcester City take a voluntary drop to Step 5 leaving a gap in the pyramid for Ware to fill.

Having finished in a relegation position in the National League North at the end of 2016/7 Worcester were wrestling with financial problems and the need to groundshare until a new ground becomes available in the city.

As a result they considered that it was more beneficial in the immediate future to voluntarily drop to Step 5 which will make travelling and playing budgets noticeably smaller. It is expected that they will enter the Midland League Premier Division.

This will mean there is a club short at Step 3, a gap that will be filled by reprieving Harrow Borough who were due to be relegated from the Ryman Premier. That in turn leaves a gap at Step 4 which will be filled by giving a reprieve to Ware who have by far the best points per game record of those clubs due to be relegated to Step 5. It is likely that we will stay in the Isthmian League.

This is excellent news for Ware who finished the season with 51 points from their 46 league games. It is less so for Worcester City and their fans but hopefully they will be able to build from their new position. It would seem unlikely that a club of that size will be playing at Step 5 for long. We wish them well.
