It is that time of year when the weather starts to dictate the league tables unless of course you are Heybridge Swifts. Their cup runs are fantastic and may have created a record. They were the lowest team in the pyramid when they went out to Exeter and if my information is correct they are the lowest placed team left in the Trophy.
Despite the frost, snow and rain games are still being played and hopefully today sees our new manager make his home debut. A friendly down at VCD on Tuesday raised hope with a 4 0 win. Steve will no doubt have mentioned elsewhere how long we have gone without scoring but it seems to be months so to score 4 seems to be like London buses.
The other news that has come to light this week is the prediction of the constitution of the new division at our level next season. The one I have seen puts us into the new Central Football league one. The good news is that Hertford and Potters Bar are predicted to be in the same division. Also Soham are predicted to be in this division with the Beds and Bucks teams of the southern league. Of course the speculation includes teams that maybe relegated or promoted. I personally like the idea of being a part of this new division, especially if we still have our new manager. New grounds to visit with no preconceived expectations of what teams will or will not do based upon historic meetings.
Still all that is a long way off and mathematically it is still possible for us to gain promotion through the play offs.
In September Spanish police arrested the President of Marbella FC as part of an investigation into the alleged laundering of 30 million euros by two major Russian organised crime groups. The investigation also includes a local golf club and a water bottling business. This brings to mind the world Cup and what involvement organised crime will have. Football clubs in the lower leagues will always be attractive to money launderers. We are not exempt with a British drug trafficker believed to have been involved in non league in the North of England. Birmingham City of course had Carson Young jailed in 2014.
So It remains for me to wish everyone a happy Christmas and prosperous new year. However beware of would be owners from far away places offering to finance fans dreams.
And on that bomb shell.
