League fixtures come out with a disappointment.

By Stephen King

The much anticipated local derbies with Hertford are shunted to normal Saturdays whilst Boxing Day and Easter Monday both see us travelling.

As the years go by there is always the chance that you get out of touch with current thinking. Maybe I was caught out in that way when I assumed the resumption of local derbies with Hertford would see the Christmas and Easter holidays allocated and grounds buzzing with large crowds. Last season saw us up against Cheshunt on Boxing Day and Easter Monday but they don't get a look in this time either with our meetings being relegated to humdrum midweek fixtures.

Perhaps the fixtures were drawn up some time ago when it was still believed that London Colney would be in the division and all that's happened is that Hertford have taken over their matches. If so why did we have to wait this long to find out who we are playing and when? If the answer is that we have to wait for higher leagues to publish their fixtures to avoid clashes that is an acceptance that changes might need to be made. In this case I would suggest making the change of swapping Hertford/London Colney fixtures with those of Potters Bar but it's too late now.

What the league has done this year is pair the late August bank holiday with Boxing Day on which we meet Waltham Abbey home and away, and New Year's Day with Easter Monday on which we meet Potters Bar Town home and away. I find it frustrating and as an aside we now end up being away on both Boxing Day and Easter Monday. Presumably half the division are affected that way whilst the other half will have two good pay days at the turnstiles.

Looking beyond that initial grumpy response our season starts at home with an enticing match against Maldon & Tiptree who beat us three times last season, were runners up in the division and lost out on promotion in the play-off final against Thurrock. They clearly offer a challenge to us as we seek our first opening day win since 2008.

After that we travel to Cheshunt for one of those midweek meetings and then stay away as we enter the FA Cup at either Newmarket or Great Wakering. Thereafter I guess we can say the season is well and truly on its way.

You can see the full fixtures here and if you feel able to put up match posters for our home games you can find them here.

Where next?

Part time bar staff vacancies. Vacancies exist for bar staff at our well appointed clubroom.
Another mega signing after Tuesday training plus three more confirmed. A former Football League player; a pillar of our defence; a product of our development process; and one of Kem's old boys all signed on Tuesday.
