1920 saw a 7-1 win over Hoddesdon Town in the East Herts League with a hat trick from Hart and two each from Wainwright and Cockman. Curiously we lost the away fixture 3-2 seven days later but gained a Herts County League double over Hoddesdon in two further games. We finished second in both leagues come the end of the season.
1926 brought a 5-2 defeat of Welwyn Garden City in the second round of the Herts Charity Shield which we went on to win two rounds later, beating Stevenage Town 3-2 at Allenbury's ground. The goals against Welwyn were scored by George Dearman who added two to a total that would reach 98 for the season - a club record, another brace for Bill Clibbon and one for Sam Goodey. The last two names remained active with the club and sat on the management committee when I first got involved in the 1960s.
1965 and this time Ruislip Manor were the beaten side, going down 5-1 in an Athenian League Division Two game. There were two goals for Arnie Hubbard but also contributions from favourites Dudley Baker and Derek Tucker. The other goal came from Derek Hoddle, father of Glenn who used to kick a ball about with Gary Riddle by the side of the pitch. I'm sure the advice I gave him about ball skills was put to good use.
