1898 saw us defeat the 'A' side of an earlier, professional St Albans team. Two goals apiece were scored by Harry Blakes and Bernard Catling who, in the folklore of the club, were triallists for the England amateur side though I can find no corroborative evidence for that claim. Wheeler and Durrant were the other scorers in a 6-0 win.
It was a good season for Ware that culminated in our first ever Herts Senior Cup triumph as we took the trophy by 2-1 against Hitchin.
Another good season was 1966/7 which saw us gain promotion from the Athenian League Division Two. After a sluggish beginning we started to come good and our 3-0 defeat of Windsor & Eton was the second of three consecutive home wins by that score. Dudley Baker, Frankie Scales and Johnnie Nash netted and the club continued in good goal scoring form as we went on to lose only one of our 17 remaining league games.
