The Christmas shopping bug must have hit Ware early that year as we had our lowest attendance of 1972/3 for what was our best win in the Athenian League Division 2 that season, but still just one goal better than our earlier defeat of Wingate.
Scorers against Eastbourne were Don Whyte with two, Dave Gigg also with two (one from the penalty spot), Graham Tibbals and Dave Clark. Tibbals, a long time servant of the club, ended his career with 111 goals (see the miscellaneous club records here). Whyte, Gigg and Clark were all capable of banging in the goals too, so much so that they had spent more of their time with the top clubs around Hertfordshire and north London leaving less time to build a good total for the Blues.
We finished third in the table that season on goal average. Had the table been based as now on goal difference we would have been second and Hampton (now Hampton & Richmond Borough) third. In any event Hampton (a team we beat twice that season) were accepted into the Isthmian League and we were promoted to the Athenian Premier Division in their stead.
We also won away to Eastbourne Town who finished third from bottom in the table.
