The last Saturday before Christmas 1969 found us at home to Hertford in the 3rd round of the Athenian League Cup. It finished 0-0 but Nat Miller was denied a goal when the referee blew for half time between the ball leaving Nat's boot and hitting the back of the net. I wouldn't expect that degree of timing exactitude nowadays.
The replay took place in late January and Ware went 1-0 and then 2-1 up in a match they had the better of. Late in the game Hertford had a corner that came over too high leaving a Hertford forward to vent his frustration by clearly reaching up to punch the ball into the net. Somehow only the referee and the relevant linesman failed to see this and a second equaliser was awarded.
A second replay took place in February and despite returning to Buryfield we had no advantage what so ever and lost 6-0. I'm still waiting for fate to return the favour it dealt Hertford in that Athenian Cup tie.
