Yesterday's advent calendar entry highlighted 1954's home Amateur Cup game against Clevedon who came to us from Somerset. A year earlier we had welcomed a team from even further west with Nanpean Rovers travelling to Buryfield as Cornwall Senior League champions.
The long journey might well have taken its toll as we ran out easy winners by 6 goals to 2. Ron Goodey scored twice as some compensation for the hat trick he scored in the previous week's league game that was ultimately abandoned with eleven minutes to go. All time top scorer Mo Hibbert also netted a brace with singles from Ron Wilkinson and Alf Cliss to complete the scoring.
Victory took us to an away game against arguably the greatest name from the amateur era. Bishop Auckland were too good for us and in front of a crowd of 7,100 won through to the third round by 6-1. Mo Hibbert scored our goal.
