By 1954 we were getting used to playing in the FA Amateur cup competition proper. Our first round match on this date saw us welcome Clevedon Town from Somerset. It was a close run thing with two goals from Cyril Long and another from Maurice Chopping taking us to a one-goal win.
We might have wished otherwise come the next round as we were drawn away to Walthamstow Avenue. Avenue were one of the great teams in amateur football and two years earlier had drawn away to Manchester United in the 4th round of the FA Cup before losing the replay at White Hart Lane. They had lost none of their cup fighting skills when they met Ware and handed out an 11-0 drubbing, equalling our worst ever defeat.
