2016/7 - A season in review (Part 2)

1 year ago By Stephen King

New to the stripes - 2016/7's debutants.

40 players made their debut for the club during 2016/7, two more than last season which is at least partly due to the fact that three different managers tried to develop the right combination of players.

I can't comment on them all but those that joined at the start of the season and were with us throughout deserve a mention whilst some who arrived later made their mark in one way or another.

Gareth Price (pictured) was one of several to join from Aylesbury as part of the team that Ken Charlery was building for an assault on the play-offs. He soon made his mark in pre-season games and went on to be top scorer with 24 goals in competitive matches plus ten more in friendlies. He also made 50 competitive appearances for the club; the second highest, beaten only by Murat Karagul's total of 53.

Brian Haule also arrived from Aylesbury and despite going on dual registration back to the Buckinghamshire side (ironically to help them in their successful fight against relegation) returned to complete 32 appearances and 20 goals in all matches.

A third recruit from Aylesbury was Aston Goss. Aston didn't seem to figure in Anwar Uddin's plans and left to rejoin Aylesbury after the victory at Great Wakering Rovers. He made 37 appearances and scored 4 goals from positions which varied between full back and midfield in 37 appearances.

For a long time Evandro Delgado made more appearances in the season than anyone else. He stayed injury free and kept clear of any trouble with referees so didn't suffer a suspension. Only a lengthy business trip to Portugal reduced his appearances to 48 for the season otherwise the figure would surely have been higher. Under Kem Kemal he was used as one of the shock troops, coming off the bench to apply pressure on tiring opposition defenders. He scored six goals in all matches.

Mekhi McLeod only made five appearances for the club and scored one goal; but it was his shot just into the second half of our match at Waltham Abbey that would have given us a potentially winning 2-0 lead that I remember him for. Maybe as little as half an inch lower and it would have gone in off the bar but instead it bounced down just in front of the goal line. Abbey went on to win that game and Ware started a run of five consecutive defeats and ultimately won just two more of the following ten league games before time was called on Ken Charlery.

Meanwhile Josh Oyinsan made six appearances on loan from Billericay and scored five times with the goals coming in his first four appearances.

Junior Appiah was recruited towards the end of Ken Charlery's time as manager and having had spells with a number of clubs might have been regarded as no more than a typical jobbing non-league player. However, it was Anwar Uddin who converted him to right back at the expense of fans' favourite Jack Mace. Junior flourished in that role and went on to complete 17 appearances for the club.

Anwar also brought in Tyrique Hyde-Skerrit on loan from Dagenham & Redbridge. Tyrique had made some first team appearances in the National League for the Daggers and soon settled into the team with his performances improving with every game. He was perhaps the most successful new player welcomed in this spell; Anwar's attempt to introduce a long-ball game foundering when a number of other acquisitions failed to provide an effective focal point in attack.

Kem Kemal introduced just one player wholly new to the club. Ahmed Mohammed had played under Kem during his successful spell at Waltham Forest at the start of the season and brought energy and one goal (low from distance into the Cheshunt goal) to his four appearances.
