Herts Charity Shield draw sees us home to Letchworth.

By Stephen King

Garden City Eagles are our first opponents in this competition since we beat Pirton in the 1986 final.

We opted out of the Herts Charity Cup last season and have now been placed in the Charity Shield for 2019/20. We haven't played in the competition since our victory on neutral territory in the 1985/6 season. That was our 64th Shield game compared with the 108 Charity Cup games we have played.

Curiously our run to that final started with a 2-0 home win over Letchworth Garden City with the goals coming from Lol Stapleton and Sean Brett. Although that Letchworth side has folded our return to the competition sees us at home to their descendants in the shape of Letchworth Garden City Eagles. The match must be played by October 1st.

Eagles won the Herts County League last season and only failed to gain promotion to Step 6 because their ground isn't yet up to scratch. Meanwhile we are one of three Step 4 sides in the Shield with Hertford and Welwyn Garden City the other two.

We have reached the final on nine occasions and won it six times.
